Are Grandparents Relocating To Be Near Their Grandchildren?

by James Lynch

To protect their health during the pandemic, many people distanced themselves from loved ones. Grandparents were especially advised to stay away from their grandchildren, especially as schools reopened, since there was a risk of infection if their grandchildren got sick at school.

After the pandemic separated grandparents from their grandchildren, many are eager to make up for lost time. Moving to be closer to their families is one way grandparents are doing this, as evidenced by data showing a rise in relocations among this demographic.

Grandparents Are Moving To Be Near Loved Ones

According to recent data provided by the National Association of Realtors (NAR), individuals in the age range of 55 to 74 are relocating distances exceeding 100 miles more frequently than any other age demographic (as depicted in the graph below):

Given that the average age of grandparents in the U.S. is 67, it is likely that some of the people moving the farthest are grandparents. But what is causing them to relocate such long distances?

According to the same report from NAR, the most common reason people move is to be closer to loved ones. (See graph below.)

The data suggests that many grandparents are fulfilling their desire for more quality time with their grandchildren by moving closer to them. This is especially positive given the isolation and loneliness many experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you're a grandparent, you understand the immense importance of your grandchildren. You might be willing to sell your current home and move closer to them, as described by Vance Cariaga, a journalist at Go Bank Rates:

"Never disregard the influence of grandchildren, especially concerning choices related to one's lifestyle and finances. Recent data indicates that a significant number of baby boomers are moving to more distant locations from their original homes in order to be nearer to their grandchildren."

Bottom Line

Data shows that grandparents are moving farther to be closer to their grandchildren. If you're a grandparent, you can probably relate. When you're ready to be closer to your loved ones, connect with a local real estate agent.
