Everett's Emerging Soccer Stronghold: City’s Professional Stadium Project

by James Lynch

The Kraft Group has unveiled its plan for the upcoming independent development of a Major League Soccer stadium for the New England Revolution.

Since its founding in 1996, our Major League Soccer team has been sharing a stadium with the region's only professional football team in Foxborough. Now, we're getting an initial glimpse of The Kraft Group's plans to provide the New England Revolution with its dedicated home ground.

During a public hearing, The Kraft Group unveiled its proposals for the proposed soccer stadium development for the Revolution in Everett. These plans entail re-zoning a section of the waterfront to facilitate the construction of the approximately $500 million project.

Why does the team need it’s own stadium?
Presently, the Revs are among the four remaining MLS teams utilizing a stadium originally constructed for American football. Establishing an independent stadium in the Greater Boston area has been a longstanding aspiration for the owners, also known as the Krafts.

Implementing this strategy could draw a larger audience for the 19-24 games annually and enhance the authenticity of the soccer experience by relocating seats closer to the field and designating a standing-room-only area behind one of the goals. While precise figures haven't been disclosed, the stadium's capacity could potentially accommodate up to 25,000 fans.

Where will the stadium be?
Last year, Wynn Resorts obtained the 43-acre property, a former power plant site. Situated opposite the Encore casino and close to the Orange Line's Sullivan Square stop, current proposals include incorporating a dock at the stadium location for ferries servicing the route to and from the Encore Boston Harbor casino. Additionally, plans are underway for a new footbridge spanning the Mystic River between Assembly Row and the Encore Boston Harbor casino.

What’s next?
At this stage, it's too early to discuss an opening date since the project still needs to undergo years of legislative processes and obtain numerous state and local permits before construction can even begin.
