Shuttle Buses to Replace Segment of Haverhill Line for Approximately 2 Months
During this upcoming autumn, shuttle buses will operate between Reading and Oak Grove Stations, making stops at all the usual stations in between. A portion of the Haverhill Line on the Commuter Rail will be substituted with shuttle buses for a duration of two months.
The MBTA announced on Thursday that a significant portion of the Haverhill Line on the Commuter Rail will be substituted with shuttle buses for the majority of September and the entire duration of October.
Starting from Saturday, September 9, until Sunday, November 5, the MBTA has informed through a a press release that trains will be replaced by shuttle buses between Reading and Oak Grove Stations. These shuttle buses will make stops at all the customary stations along the route between Reading and Oak Grove.
According to the MBTA, travelers have the option to utilize the Orange Line for reaching Malden Center Station and North Station. For inbound journeys on the Haverhill Line, trains will take a detour onto the Lowell Line after departing Ballardvale Station. They will make a stop at Anderson/Woburn Station before transitioning to an express route heading towards North Station.
The MBTA has arranged for shuttle bus service to operate between Reading and Anderson/Woburn, granting inbound passengers on the Haverhill Line the flexibility to opt between an express route to North Station or utilizing the shuttle buses to reach all the regular stations along the line. Furthermore, it's important to note that North Wilmington Station will not be served by trains on the Haverhill Line during this period.
The interruption in train service is essential to facilitate the installation of an Automatic Train Control/Positive Train Control safety program by the MBTA on the line. This system, mandated by federal transit authorities, plays a crucial role in averting collisions and derailments through automated train control that takes over the role of the operator.
Haverhill Line commuters’ travel options
For passengers traveling inbound on the Haverhill line, those boarding between Haverhill and Ballardvale can embark on a train just as they typically do.
Upon reaching Anderson/Woburn, passengers have the choice to either remain on the train, proceeding along the Lowell Line express route to North Station, or they can opt to board a shuttle bus bound for Reading. This option enables them to reach all the standard stations along the Haverhill Line using the shuttle buses and the Orange Line.
Inbound passengers boarding between Reading and Oak Grove on the line have the option to either utilize shuttle buses to travel to Anderson/Woburn and then proceed express to North Station, or they can choose to employ shuttle buses in conjunction with the Orange Line to reach all the regular stations along the Haverhill Line.
For outbound travel on the line, passengers will be required to utilize the Orange Line or buses to reach Oak Grove. From there, they can make use of shuttle buses and trains to reach all the customary stations along the Haverhill Line.
It remains uncertain whether outbound Haverhill Line trains will follow a route from North Station along the Lowell Line, proceeding express to Anderson/Woburn before linking up with the remainder of the line.
Passengers who typically use North Wilmington Station will need to access the line through connections at either Reading or Ballardvale.
